CARRICK RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB YOUTH ROUND UP FOR 4 OCTOBER 2008.

Carrick Rugby Club Youth teams entertained local rivals Ballyclare on Saturday at Woodlawn Grounds. In very difficult conditions in was Ballyclare who adapted best to the adverse elements recording victories at U18 and U16 level, while Carrick took the honours at U14 level.

In the tightly contested U18 match Carrick dominated both territorial and possess ional advantage over their local rival, but a narrow 5-0 lead at half time was never going to be a big enough margin playing into the wind the the second half.  Indeed Ballyclare took the lead almost immediately and then scored another try to make it 12-5 . To their credit Carrick continued to do all the attacking but just could not turn this dominance into points.  A harsh lesson for this talented side who must now refocus and concentrate on all the remaining league fixtures before xmas.

At U16 level a strong Ballyclare side built up a commanding first half lead against Carrick who although they battled right to the end could only close the margin to 18-7. Again the visiting team mastered the difficult conditions better than the home side outscoring them 3 tries to one.  Carricks young players may well be disappointed with this result but performances have been getting steadily better and the quality of rugby being produced has improved significantly since the start of the season.

On a brighter note the Carrick U14 side captained by Darren “Harry Potter” Robinson continued on with their try scoring feast in beating Ballyclare 32-3.  New signing Marcus Jones helped himself to a brace of tries with the flying “Potter” also working his magic in scoring a brace himself.  In the pack Dale Wilson deserves special mention for some barnstorming runs as does Iain McMenamin who continues to improve week on week.

Next week the three youth teams take a break from league action when they travel to Ballymoney to play friendly fixtures. Youth training continues on Wednesday night from 7- 8.45pm.
