CARRICK RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB YOUTH ROUND UP FOR 29 NOVEMBER 2008.

CARRICK UNDER 16S WIN LEAGUE MATCH AT BALLYMENA

A freezing morning saw Carrick under 16,s travel to Ballymena for there return league match. The much improved 16,s hoped to give the Ballymena side a better match after their 40 point grubbing at home and with the return from injury of key players the pack was at full strength.

The unbeaten Ballymena side started with a flurry of attacks up the centre of the park using both centres to great effect and with only minutes gone produced a try which went unconverted. After a stern talking to by their coach the Carrick side rallied and within minutes where presented with a penalty which was cooly converted by Adam Kendal. By now the Carrick  pack where dominating the proceedings up front, keeping the ball tight and preventing the Ballymena backs putting any influence on the game.

Adam Lusty at scrum half fed his loose forwards time and again as they ground down the Ballymena defence and minutes before half time Nathan Wilson touched down close to the posts from a well worked penalty move. The steady boot of Adam Kendal again converted leaving the half time score Carrick 10 Ballymena 5.

Once again the second half opened as the first had with Ballymena spreading the ball to their impressive centres who again breached Carrick,s defence the conversion being made leaving Carrick trailing by 2 points.

The Carrick centre partnership of Stephen McAllister and Peter Simpson then started to produce some massive hits stopping the Ballymena back line in their tracks and in some cases knocking them backwards completely subduing the blacks main form of attack and inspiring the Carrick pack to up their game.

Both packs became locked in what can only be described as an uncompromising battle up front with Carrick led by their captain Etan Clarke gradually taking control.

Michael Wright and Andrew Magill in Carrick,s second row deserve great credit for their unselfish work both at scrum time and in the line outs. With time rapidly running out it seemed that all Carrick,s efforts would be in vain, however after being in Ballymena,s 22 for a substantial period the blacks again leaked a penalty. This was slotted over again by Adam Kendal to give Carrick a much deserved win in this highly entertaining bruising confrontation.

All the Carrick under 16,s can now move on with confidence into the festive season.

Unlucky Under 14s loose to Ballymena

Carrick U14s travelled to Ballymena where they marginally lost by 5 points. In the first half, Carrick were playing down the hill and they started brightly, forcing an error from a Ballymena player who knocked it on and Carrick were on top from the resulting scrum, where they set a marker for their opponents. Ballymena, however, against the run of play, kicked the ball long and chased it up and scored left of the posts. Try was converted. From the restart, Carrick were determined to get back into the game, which they did, when Darren (Harry Potter) Robinson, took a tackle, offloaded the ball to Jordan Beasant who sent Jordan Patchett over the line for a try. J Warnock converted. From there on in till half-time, Carrick were on top, and it showed when good phases of play from Carrick’s forwards gave quick ball to the backs and quick hands to Darren (Harry Potter) Robinson and he ran around the Ballymena winger to score under the posts, try was not converted to leave score 12-7 in Carrick’s favour.

The second was evenly matched, though Carrick’s scrum was dominating throughout. 15mins into second half, Ballymena got the score from a scrum, they seen space at the blind side to score, but was unconverted. With the scores 12-12 it was all to play for with both teams pushing for the win. Carrick were awarded a penalty at Ballymena’s 22, and Jordan Beasant fended his way through the oncoming tackles to score under the posts, with Jamie Warnock converting to take score 19-12.

With game approaching full-time, scrums went uncontested and from the next scrum, Ballymena back row was not bound to the scrum and from that lead to a converted score. Carrick kept strongly at it and defended well, but Ballymena 13 seen a gap around the outside of the defence to score, try unconverted.

With score 24-19, Carrick kept at it to the end but were unable to breach the Ballymena defence. Final score Ballymena 24 Carrick 12.
