CARRICK RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB YOUTH ROUND UP FOR 15 NOVEMBER 2008.
CARRICK U14S CONTINUE IN WINNING WAYS………………
Saturday 15th November, Carrick u14s travelled to Ards were they were the victors
17-
First have,
it was very much matched, with each team visiting the opponents half regularly and
the same mistakes being produced by each team. The deadlock was broken when Carrick
were awarded a scrum in the middle of the park and when Ethan Montgomery picked the
ball up from the back of the scrum, there was only going to be one outcome….try!!!!
Try was converted by Jamie Warnock to put score 7-
Start of second half
started the way the first half did, as both teams making unforced errors and threatening
the opposition line. With 10mins to go, a good run by Dale Wilson and good, quick
ball through the hands to Jordan Beasant produced a great team try. Try was unconverted
to put the score 17-
Carrickfergus U16s Rue Sluggish Start
Ards U16 XV 19 Carrick U16 XV 13
Carrick U16s travelled to Hamilton Park on Saturday hunting for elusive league points and surely rue a sluggish start which allowed their energetic Ards opponents two early tries.
The Woodlawn team’s nemesis was once again poor kickoff reception which went unclaimed by at least three Carrick players and was eventually brought under a degree of control only 5 meters from their goal line. In the long term of the match this proved to be the defining moment of the game.
This was a dream start for Ards who gained possession from a go forward scrum and retained the ball through several phases before crossing near the posts for their opening try which was converted by their hugely influential out half.
Carrick who showed several self imposed changes in personnel and position from the selected team had prepared well pre match and completed a committed warm up session but took far too long to find the pace of the game.
The Carrick coaches had asked for players to accept responsibility in pressure situations and show leadership to their colleagues but this challenge was accepted by only a small group of players as opposed to becoming a team objective.
Ards continued to pressurise but sturdy defence repelled them before their out half changed tactics and kicked behind the Carrick rush defence, the Carrick last line defender was posted missing and Ards touched down for the second time.
At this stage Carrick out half Adam Kendall had to leave the field for attention to a severe nose bleed and cut lip, with Carrick reduced to 14 players a certain resolve entered the team and they held Ards pointless until Kendall returned to kick a penalty and bring the half to a close with Ards 12 points to 3 ahead.
The second half saw Carrick up the ante and with Johnny Murray lighting the fuse with some strong carries and tackles this proved the catalyst for Nathan Wilson to produce some of his trademark runs from deep which time and time again took the blindside flanker across the gain line and well behind the Ards defence.
This type of committed play by these two saw them share the man of the match accolade and provided a much needed boost for a Carrick team which was now starting to believe in themselves.
A period of sustained pressure allowed Simon Beggs to touch down from short range to reduce the Ards advantage and this was the signal for Carricks best phase of the game.
In the back row Ethan Clarke & Stevie McAllister were now following Nathan Wilsons lead with McAllister’s tackle count proving inspirational.
A promising move however where the ball was moved right to the wing proved fruitful for Ards when their left wing dispossessed the tackled Carrick player to run 60 meters for a converted try.
Carrick showed great spirit then to return to Ards territory and it was joint man of the match Nathan Wilson who crossed for a well taken try, this brought the score to 19 – 12 in favour of Ards and was in deed to be the final score.
With some time remaining Carrick were unable to reduce the defecit and thus returned home with some regret about their start to the game.
In a game that promised so much too few players delivered the required performance, it was disappointing as there is so much potential in the team and they should now use their second half performance as a springboard to their next match.

Carrick U 18s win despite mounting wounded list.
Ards U18 -
The 18's at the club are hampered by an ever increasing list of serious injuries and some of those to very talented players. Many other clubs would fail to field a team under such circumstances but such is the size of our local club's squad that to our credit they can still muster a winning team plus a full subs bench.
On saturday the boys travelled to Ards with maybe one eye on next weeks important clash with Malone in mind. Ards started strongley and came away with a penalty after 10mins. Ards went further ahead when the Carrick backs failed to clear a huge wind assisted downfieldrun. The Ards winger cleverly took a quick throw for his fullback to score in the corner.
Carrick struck back strongly against the breeze and after several darts at the line finally scored wide out when Karl Turkington crossed the line for Luke Whittle to fire over a marvellous conversion.
The second half was all Carrick pressure but the Reds failed to change diminance
into points. Several times they failed to ground the ball over the line. in the end
the strength told and Ards conceded a penalty which Whittle gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Matt Ginn clearly scored but the ref. ruled out thes try. it was of
little consequence as from the resulting scrum captain Jason Wady stormed over in
the corner, Whittle again landing a graet conversion. Final score 17-
Next week carrick travel to malone for another vital must win league match….
