Carrick U13s Blow Derry Away.

Our latest road trip and furthest in 5 weeks took us to the Maiden city. The weather promised to be breezy but no one would have imagined just how Carrick U13 could blow the home side off the pitch.

The game was only a minute old when Jake Porter scored the first of his 4 tries converted by out-half Sam Wallace. The Carrick pack who have worked hard on their rucking and clearing out provided great ball for their midfield trio of Wallace, Porter and Cambridge who ran and handled superbly. Conor Cambridge showed great skill and pace to score under the posts and shortly after Sam Wallace scored a great try which he converted himself.

The squad of players at Carrick's disposal allowed for numerous substitutes with several new players keen to impress. Young Jordan Devenney had a great run on the right to provide Stefan Pollin with a try and two minutes later a great transfer along the backline saw Josh Hobson run the length of the pitch to score under the posts. Gareth Smith converted Benjy Hunter's try and man of the match Conor Cambridge scored a wonderful solo effort from deep inside his own half.

We'd like to thank City of Derry for their marvellous hospitality and the parents who travelled such a long way to support the boys.

Final Result: City of Derry 10- 73 Carrick.

Roll on next week - Ballymoney at Woodlawn 11 o'clock K.O. Come and watch. You'll not be disappointed.

At Under 15 level Carrick Youth continued their winning streak with a closely contested 10-7 win away to City of Derry U15s.  In very challenging conditions Carrick chose to play with the gale force winds on their backs in the first have and some good tactical kicking by half backs Lewis Stockman and Peter Magill kept the home side pinned back in their own half. Carrick were rewarded for their territorial advantage with a well taken try by Darren Robinson which went unconverted leaving the score 5-0 at the interval.

The Carrick side, who sit second in the Premier league, knew they faced a massive challenge in the second half to maintain their recent run of away victories. Once again John Magill was the outstanding forward on show from Carrick. His tireless defencsive work kept the away side in the game on many occasions. Additionally Adam Williams and Darren Robinson were also responsible for making critical tackles. A good phase of structured play saw Carrick venture in to the Derry 22 and after a number of “pick and goes”, Iain McMenamin smashed over the line of a vital score.

The home side reply was almost immediate with a well worked back play being superbly converted by the home sides outhalf leaving the score 10-7 to Carrick with 12 minutes still to play. City of Derry continued to apply all the pressure but to their credit Carrick held on courageously for their 4th consecutive away win on the road.

The mood in the changing rooms was not of euphoria but that of relief. This was a well below par performance from the side and a great deal of hard work will have to be done this week in training before the visit of a highly rated Ballymoney side to Woodlawn next week.

Man of the Match: John Magill

The U17s side again had a very early start for the 5 th week in a row travelling away from home, this time it was the highly fancied City of Derry.

Again with key players injured the under 17,s ran out at Derry hoping to carry on the outstanding performance from the previous week at Banbridge. The coaches were delighted with the team fronting up against a Derry side up there with the best in this premier league.

The first half was highlighted with  the ferocious battle up front with neither pack prepared to give an inch. Capt Mark Ferris led by example from No 8 what was a very inexperienced Carrick pack fielding 4 new players due to injuries.

The second half continued in the same vain, with some massive hits up front. Adam Lusty at scrumhalf came close to breaking the stalemate with a well weighted box kick and chase however Derry managed to scramble the ball into touch feet from the goal line.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw when minutes from the final whistle Derry broke the Carrick back line, much against the run of play, to score the only points of the game. Final score Derry 7 Carrick 0.

A superb effort once again from a rapidly improving side that now can look forward to home advantage in the run up to Christmas.

Man of the match Adam Lusty.
