Carrickfergus Under 13s had another successful outing, an excellent performance from
both forwards and backs which secured a first league win over Portadown 36 -
The development of the team was starting to show with strong runs by James Carson and numerous other forwards enabling the backs to show their skill, pace and ever growing flair. Rory Magill, Benjamin Hunter & Daniel McBurney kept constant pressure on the opposition which resulted in numerous handling errors. Evan Sloan scored two tries both runs starting from inside his own half. Other try scorers were Harry Burbidge, Ross Nicholson and Sam Wallace who also converted one of the tries. Thomas fleming and Harry Burbidge converted two others. Special mention must go to Scott Molloy who put in a stirling tackle against the biggest guy on the pitch.
Great start to the season with 3 wins out of 3. Well done guys!! Training continues this Wednesday night at 7pm with all new players being welcome.
At U15 level………………
Second game of the season for the Carrick under 17,s and against their arch rivals Portadown. This was a keenly awaited game against the Portadown side that put Carrick out of the Cup quarter finals last year.
The game kicked of in fine mizzle rain making an open game very difficult with a very slippery ball. Both sides appeared fired up for the confrontation with the initial hits being hard an uncompromising. Neither side could penetrate each others defences, most of the play being kept tight up front.
The deadlock was nearly broken when out half Marcus Livingstone switched with Jordan Patchett who broke two tackles and was only stopped metres from the Poratadown line. A great break from a young new comer to the side.
Spared on by the Carrick back play the pack took up the mantle and from the scrum
Adam Lusty broke to feed the outstanding Nathan Wilson who stormed through the Portadown
midfield to score the only try of the game. The try was converted by Adam Kendall
to give Carrick a hard fought 7-
The second half found Portadown coming out even more determined to break down the Carrick defence, however the Carrick organisation in defence proved to be solid. Time and again Portadown hammered away at the Carrick midfield only to meet stubburn tackling from Arron Ellis, Jordan Patchett and Alex Scott.
Sustained Portadown pressure resulted in two penalties being converted leaving the remaining 10 mins of the game a very tense affair.
Carrick rallied well and ended the game in the ascendancy pressurising the Portadown line.
The final whistle blew giving Carrick revenge for the 2008 game. A bruising encounter
reflected by the 7-
The Carrick coaching team where delighted with their sides performance giving particular praise to the young replacements who filled in for the injury riddled pack.
2 for 2 in the 2009 season!
